It's okay to be mad about it, but it's better to understand it.
- There are approximately 800 homeless people in Sioux Falls. The number of people at imminent risk is probably several times higher.
- Of those, more than one third are children.
- Most of the homeless people surveyed were using transitional housing to stay temporarily until they find a place.
- Some said they were staying with family or friends, followed by staying at one of the city's two homeless shelters.
- Ninety-eight adults and 15 children said they were living outdoors.
- Forty percent said they cannot afford housing in Sioux Falls.
- Twenty-nine percent said they were working - but didn't make enough to cover housing and other needs.
The Sioux Falls Housing and Redevelopment Commission has 2,290 people on a waiting list for help with housing.
